South Korea's military monitored the movement of a suspected North Korean balloon into the country's airspace.
Reuters reported that, as announced on February 6 by South Korea's Defense Ministry, a suspected North Korean balloon with a length of about 2 meters flew into the country's airspace for a short period of time on February 2.
After a few hours, the balloon left South Korean airspace. Yonhap quoted an unnamed South Korean official as saying that officials believed it was just a weather balloon. As a result, the South Korean military did not take anti-aircraft measures such as sending fighter jets to the scene.
The news comes amid strained relations between Washington and Beijing, following the downing of a Chinese balloon shot down by the US while appearing on US territory.
Meanwhile, tensions between South and North Korea have also risen following a series of missile tests last year by Pyongyang, and joint U.S.-South Korean military exercises.
